Brita Standard pitcher review: America's best seller has no lead certification

The Brita Standard pitcher ships with the Standard (Legacy) element, cert model OB03, certified to NSF/ANSI 42 only. That standard covers aesthetic effects: taste, odour and chlorine. It holds no lead claim, no PFAS claim, and no health-contaminant claim of any kind.

What NSF/ANSI 42 actually means

It is the aesthetic effects standard. It certifies that a filter improves how water tastes and smells, chiefly by reducing chlorine. It says nothing about health contaminants, and it is not a weaker version of a health claim: it is a different category of test entirely.

When we pulled the certification record for the Standard element, the reduction claim field reads "Not Applicable". There is no health-effects listing, so there is nothing to interpret generously.

Why this matters more than it sounds

This is the highest-volume household water filter in the United States. The replacement cartridge alone carries over 227,000 Amazon reviews. An enormous number of households are filtering their water believing they are addressing lead, when the certification does not cover it.

Lead is worth being precise about, because EPA and CDC agree there is no known safe level, and it enters through service lines and household plumbing rather than the treatment plant. Your neighbour's result does not predict yours.

What to do instead

If you want a Brita and lead is your concern, the Elite element is certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for lead and fits the same pitcher. It is a small price step and a genuine difference in what has been independently verified.

If PFAS is the concern, no Brita pitcher element we checked holds a PFAS certification. That needs a different product class.

What the Standard filter is good at

Making chlorinated tap water taste better, cheaply, with excellent availability. If that is what you want, it is certified to do exactly that and 60,000 reviewers are broadly happy. The problem is not the product. It is the gap between what people think they are buying and what has been certified.
