AquaTru Classic review: certified, but not by the bodies most people check

The AquaTru Classic does not appear in the NSF or WQA certification databases, though its Amazon listing asserts certification to NSF/ANSI standards. The explanation is that AquaTru certifies through IAPMO R&T, a third ANSI-accredited body we have not yet reviewed. We are withholding a score rather than calling it uncertified.

Three certifiers, not two

Most consumer guidance, including our own earlier method, names NSF and WQA. There is a third: IAPMO R&T, also ANSI-accredited, also testing to the same NSF/ANSI standards. A product certified through IAPMO is genuinely certified and will be entirely absent from the other two databases.

This matters beyond one product. Any site that checks only NSF and reports "not certified" will be wrong about every IAPMO-certified product on the market. We were on course to make that error here and caught it during verification.

Why we are not scoring it

Our scores come from certification records we have read. We have not yet read IAPMO's. Scoring this product as uncertified would state something we believe to be false; scoring it as certified would state something we have not verified. So the card shows no score and says why.

That is a temporary position. Once IAPMO is added to our sources, this product gets a real score like everything else.

What to do in the meantime

If you are considering this unit, ask AquaTru directly for its IAPMO listing number and the specific claims certified under it. A certified manufacturer can produce that immediately. The claims are what matter: "certified to NSF/ANSI standards" does not say which standard or which contaminants, and those are the whole question.

A note on the listing language

The Amazon title asserting "Certified NSF/ANSI Standards, Removes 84 Contaminants" is the kind of phrasing that makes verification harder. NSF/ANSI names a family of standards written by NSF; certification against them can be granted by any accredited body. A shopper reading that reasonably assumes NSF certified it, searches NSF, finds nothing, and concludes the claim is false. It is not false. It is imprecise, and the imprecision costs buyers trust that the product may deserve.

Everything above is verifiable in about a minute. Search the exact model number at NSF's certified products database or WQA's Gold Seal directory. Use the model number, not the brand: certification is granted per model, and brand-level results routinely describe a different product.
