Do water filters actually remove PFAS?

The certification on the box tells you exactly what a filter is proven to remove. Almost nobody reads it, and manufacturers rely on that.

The short answer: only two certifications mean a filter is independently proven to reduce PFAS. NSF/ANSI 53 certified specifically for PFOA and PFOS, and NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis. A filter certified only under NSF/ANSI 42 is a taste-and-odour filter and does approximately nothing for PFAS, no matter what the box implies.

What the certification numbers actually mean

NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects: chlorine taste, odour, visible particles. This is what most cheap pitchers carry. It says nothing about health contaminants.

NSF/ANSI 53 covers health effects: lead, cysts, VOCs, and, where specifically listed, PFOA and PFOS. The critical detail is that certification under 53 is contaminant by contaminant. A filter can be certified under 53 for lead and have no PFAS certification whatsoever, and its packaging will still say "NSF/ANSI 53 certified" in large type.

NSF/ANSI 58 covers reverse osmosis systems, which physically exclude a broad range of dissolved contaminants including most PFAS. This is the most thorough option for a household.

NSF/ANSI 401 covers emerging contaminants such as pharmaceutical residues. Useful, but not a PFAS certification.

How do I check a specific filter?

Do not read the box. Search the manufacturer's model number in NSF's own certification listing database, which is public and free. It shows the exact standards a model is certified under and, for NSF/ANSI 53, the specific contaminants. If a model does not appear, it is not certified, whatever the marketing says. This takes about a minute and is the single most useful consumer step in this entire topic.

Watch for two tricks. "Tested to NSF standards" is not certification; it means the company ran its own test. And certification often applies to one model in a product family while the marketing covers all of them, so match the model number exactly.

Does boiling, freezing, or letting water sit help?

No. Boiling concentrates PFAS, because the water leaves and the compounds stay. Freezing does nothing. Letting water sit does nothing. PFAS are called forever chemicals because the carbon-fluorine bond is among the strongest in organic chemistry, and nothing you can do in a kitchen breaks it.

What about lead? Is that the same filter?

Not necessarily, and this catches people. Lead reduction is NSF/ANSI 53 certified for lead. PFAS reduction is NSF/ANSI 53 certified for PFOA and PFOS. Same standard number, different certifications. If both concern you, check that the specific model lists both, or go to reverse osmosis under NSF/ANSI 58, which covers a wide range at once.

Do you need a filter at all?

That depends entirely on what your utility reported, which is why we would rather you look up your own system than buy on general anxiety. EPA's UCMR 5 testing found no PFAS in the majority of systems tested, including large ones like Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver and Seattle. If your system is one of those and your building has no lead service line, a filter buys you taste, not safety.

If your system did have detections, or your home predates the 1986 lead ban, filtration is worth the money. Match the certification to the contaminant you actually have, replace cartridges on schedule, since an expired cartridge can perform worse than none, and ignore anything advertised on the strength of alkalinity, structure, or energy.

Do Brita filters remove PFAS?
Standard carbon pitcher filters certified only under NSF/ANSI 42 are taste-and-odour filters and are not certified to reduce PFAS. Some manufacturers now sell specific models certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for PFOA and PFOS. Check the exact model number in NSF's public certification listing rather than relying on the packaging.
Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?
Yes. Reverse osmosis systems certified under NSF/ANSI 58 physically exclude most PFAS compounds and are the most thorough household option. They waste some water and remove beneficial minerals along with contaminants.
Does boiling water remove PFAS?
No, it concentrates them. Water evaporates and PFAS remain, so the concentration in what is left actually rises.
